Diving the Fu Chan Saint Maarten November 2021
Aiar Ghelber Nov 24, 2021
On November 21 2021, Aiar and Josh, owner and founder of See the Sea RX, had the pleasure of diving the Fu Chan in Saint Martin Island with their Hollis rebreathers.
The boat is laying at a depth of approximately 100 feet upside down on the Dutch Side of the island. There is not much information to what caused the boat to sink. Since that boat is not located in shallow water there is no easy way to tie the boat into the dive site. Josh and Aiar had to locate the wreck from the dive boat with sonar and do a "hot drop" the the ocean floor to avoid being swept away from the wreck by the current. This is accomplished by jumping in with empty BC’s so they sank right away and finning straight down as fast as possible.
Upon arrival at the wreck, you could see few lion fish and some sand moray. It’s also the home of two very pretty spotted moray eel. A few reef sharks came to check the wreck out while the dive was being conducted but they decided to leave on their marry way pretty fast. One of the most stunning animals on that wreck was the massive lobster. Josh claims that this is the biggest lobster he ever seen. Aiar has seen bigger. After spending about an hour on that wreck Josh and Aiar started their accent to their first deco stop. After about 20 min of deco they both got on the boat and made their way home.
The gear that was used used for this dive beside the rebreather was an aluminum 80 filled with 32% oxygen. Bailout regulators were the scubapro mk25\g260 and the Atomic M1. The backup computers used for this dive were the Garmin MK2i. You can check out some of the photos from this dive in the links. We used an iPhone 13 inside a SeaLife case with two 2500 Dragon lights.
